Chat, Connect, Create

Arthurs Shed is a beautiful studio set in the landscaped garden of Arthur Rank Hospice, based at Shelford Bottom.

From here we run wellbeing related workshops, free of charge, to our local community.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • You do not need a connection to the Hospice; sessions are open to the public and most attendees are local residents
  • Sessions are FREE, donations are welcomed but not mandatory
  • The maximum in a session is 10 people, most have around 6-8 people
  • Access to the Shed is through our Bistro and into the garden, you do not come into clinical areas
  • The Shed is wheelchair accessible and disabled toilets are based in the main building
  • There is a Bistro on site, so many attendees stay on for a coffee and cake or lunch after a session. Our Bistro is also open to the public and dogs are welcome!
  • We are an inclusive and informal space, sessions are drop in and if you need to step out or leave that’s no problem, there are also quiet spaces you can use.
  • Sessions need to be booked in advance to manage numbers, you can book onto as many sessions as you like.
  • The space is also open to the public to use for groups, workshops and meetings, please enquire if this is something you’d be interested in.

What’s on?

We deliver a range of sessions, these include Chair Fit, Astronomy, Meditation, Laughter Workshops, Knitting and Still Life Drawing. Sessions are primarily led by volunteers who are passionate and experienced (and where appropriate, qualified).

What do the sessions involve?

Chair Fit with Sarah

Sarah is a registered yoga teacher with advanced training in areas relating to trauma and mental health. Her chair fit sessions focus on a gentle and supported approach with the intention of improving mobility, strength, tone and confidence.

Astronomy with Peter

Peter is retired from a career in telecommunications engineering and teaching. He teaches his sessions on the assumption his guests have no prior knowledge and teaches you a basic understanding of the night sky and how to understand and interpret the large-scale structure of the universe.

Laughter with Sue and Muriel

Sue and Muriel are both trained in Laughter Yoga, which focuses on techniques and breathing exercises believed to have positive benefits on the mind and body. The core principle is rooted in the idea that the body is unable to recognise the difference between intentional and unintentional laughter, meaning you can receive the same benefits from deliberate exercises. No actual yoga involved!

Knitting & Crochet with Suzanne

Suzanne is a keen knitter and creates a space for all levels of experience to learn or simply enjoy crochet and knitting. Bring existing projects or patterns you’d like to try or come and learn the basics! Wool and needles provided or you are welcome to bring your own.
Still life drawing with Helena

Helena is an experienced Artist who believes drawing is the foundation for all art. This session is a mixed ability session, more experienced Artists are welcome to bring projects; those who are starting from scratch will be taught the basic principles. The session is relaxed and guests are invited to be creative in ways which feel interesting and exciting for them. All materials provided.

Meditation with Daksha

Daksha uses guided meditation, breathing exercises and singing bowls to create an absolute sense of calm and tranquillity. She also shares information about the chakras and how these relate to different areas of the body, for those that find this interesting or beneficial. Listen to Dakshas soothing voice and peaceful music and drift into a sense of deep relaxation. Sessions are primarily seated but guests are welcome to use a yoga mat if they prefer.
